we have put anti freeze and still it over heats within minutes of driving. im pretty sure its the thermostat. l know it needs to probably be replaced but l dont know however do l need to replace the gasket as well? also the speedometer lights dont work can l fix that myself? the dash lights up except for the speedometer (i think thats hwat its called the hands that go up and down when your driving and shows you how much gas you have) lol can you tell im a first time car owner =D

There is an hydraulic cooling fan for the radiator that is powered by the power steering pump. Is the fan turning & if so is it moving a large amount of air across the radiator when vehicle is overheating? There is a duty solenoid on the power steering pump that will increase fan speed as temperature rises, it is common for non LEXUS mechanics to leave this solenoid unplugged & will cause overheating while vehicle is at low speeds.

Hi there! l am no Lexus maintenance & repair expert, but l can tell u some common problems that will cause a car to overheat:
1. The thermostat (like u mentioned). l do not know what it costs for a Lexus, but years ago, l had an '86 Ford T-Bird, & it cost me $10. l am sure it is way more for a Lexus, but replacing it is simple. If ur car is still under warranty, l recommend u have the dealer, or an accredited repair shop replace the thermostat.
2. The waterpump. This is a much more complicated & costly animal. If the warranty is still good, take it to the dealer. Otherwise, consult ur trusted neighborhood mechanic, as this is a day-long process to replace (in other words, big bucks).
3. The radiator. It is possible u have a small hole/leak in it. If so, u will need a new radiator. For replacement, refer to Q#2.

Speedometer lights:
1. The bulb burnt out. If so, u will have to remove the dashboard & the front of ur instrument panel to replace the bulb. l did this on my T-bird, & it was an absolute BITCH, because the steering wheel was in my way. It is worth the money to pay someone to do it for you.
2. There is a bad fuse. l do not know about ur Lexus, but in mine, the fuse box is located in the engine compartment, up against the firewall (furthest away from the grille). If it is not there, check up under the dashboard on the driver is side. Your owner is manual will tell u which fuse powers what, & replacing a fuse is inexpensive, simple, & something u can do yourself.
3. Hands go up & down: this could be an electrical issue, or it could be a broken spring. Either way, u will need a professional to take a look at, & fix it.

For the Thermostat that thing is is a pain to replace. You will need a gasket when you replace it . the other option is just to remove it. Now with the Neddels that is expensive yet ask your dealer or calll Merkado Tech. In Gilroy they do replacements for gage clusters for half of what the dealer will charge.
