Do turbochargers give you more power at higher RPMs? From what l thought, you usually only put a turbo on a manual transmission car because you can get hight RPMs before you shift, unlike an auto transmission when you cannot get above ~2500 RPMs.

Additionally, can the stock Lexus IS300 engine be turbocharged? I've only read that people swap out with a Toyota Supra turbocharged engine, but l was wondering if you could just turbo the stock engine. Is that practical?

turbos just give you more power, not because it pushes it to a higher rpm, but it gives more air to the engine, so fuel supply to the engine is increased automatically. if u put a turbo on your is, it will void ur warranty. And btw, if u live in the US, there is no is 300. just 250 and 350.

IS 300 had a great engine. It was esentially the same engine in the base Supra, non turbo. It was not originally meant to handle boost though, so u would need to build up the bottom end quite a little bit for a lot of power, it can handle just a little bit of boost without going bad. If u go crazy then something will go wrong & it will damage ur engine. That is the exact reason people swap out the reason for an engine that was meant to handle boost.

They give the most power at higher RPM is by forcing more air into the engine, but some have been known to induce turbo log. Thats when the turbo is not spinning quick enough so the engine does not get all the air it needs. Normally that happens at lower RPM's.

Anyway, they can be bolted onto manual or automatic turbos. It is just tougher on most automatics because the transmission itself is huge & that extra space is where people bolt the things. Also, automatic transmissions drain a lot of the power associated w/ turbos when they're not optimized for use with a turbo. Think about it, if a tiny little car only had 100 hp, there would be no real use in putting an automatic transmission that could handle 120 hp. Those r just random numbers, but they show why automatics tend to do poorly compared to manual cars w/ aftermarket turbos.

l would just say that its impractical to turbocharge a car that does not have a turbo already, its just too much custom work & it gets expensive quickly.
