the Lexus IS300 is a great car. Avoid the '01, the '02 thru '05 are the ones without any complaints. They have plenty of power with 215hp. Rated at 18 city/ 24 hwy, but l get 22mpg in the city, l do not race. I've heard the 5spds are nice, but the auto have tiptronic (manual shift option), so why go manual?
l have a 2002 Lexus IS300 silver, black leather, 39K miles. No problems.

Check out this review from consumerreports.org:

The rear-wheel-drive IS300 arrived for 2001 to compete with cars like the BMW 3 Series & Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Power comes from a silky-smooth 215-hp inline six-cylinder mated to a five-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission. The ride is quite stiff & a bit jittery, & lacks the compliance found in the German models. Handling is very capable but falls a bit short of the 3 Series benchmark. The IS300 is interior is quite snug, & its stark ambience is not to everyone is taste. Tire noise is noticeable but not unbearable. The rear seat is tight for two adults, & trunk space is meager. A hatchback came in 2002. The IS has been redesigned for the 2006 model year, & offers two V6 engines & available all-wheel drive.
