They are SUPPOSED to get hot. If you take them off, odds are you fail inspection; and if you punch holes in them, you will be paying hundreds to fix them.

Talk to your mechanic.

The entire exhaust system in general tends to get hot, but it's
especially true for the catalytic converter. They work best when they are hot. Do not worry about it. Do not do anything to them or, yes, you will fail inspection.

If they are getting TOO hot, the engine is burning too much fuel. l have seen cat converters get RED hot because the engine was getting too much fuel delivered to it. The converters then try very hard to burn the extra fuel.

Catalic converter r suppose to be hot to function properly, it converts (filters) harmful exhaust into water vapor & a little of carbon dioxide.

If ur think the heat from the converters r transfer into the driving cabin, the heat shield on the converter might be off or there might be a leak in ur exhaust. Do a smell test everytime u think the converters r hot to see if there is a leak.

It also might be two things, either ur engine is running rich (more fuel into engine) or u might have restrictive exhaust system that backpressure is compress upstream back to front of the car.

Good Luck.

Hi, the cats(catalitic converters) supposed to get hot that is how they work, the question is. how hot are they getting, if your cats have changed colors (usually they look purple or dark red color) they need to be replaces, and if your cats are bad most likely your check engine like should be on. There is not really a best way to fix them than shop around on muffler shops and try to get the best deal, but just for being a Lexus you should be ready to spend some money.
