l am looking to buy a pre 2000 model year lexus coup.l have done some research, but l am having trouble figuring out wether to get a 6 cyl lexus sc300 or a 8 cyl lexus sc400.Does the larger engine car get ALOT worse gas mileage? Is maintenance on both cars the same?Anyone that owns either of these cars have any insight?

A bigger engine does mean worse gas mileage, but not by a whole lot. Maybe 3-5 miles per gallon less, but you have so much more power. Maintenance is different because of the different engine, but the procedure for the maintenance is the same.

They both cost a bunch in maintenance. Look elsewhere if you want a cheap ride.

They're both solid cars, but l lean towards the sc300. Gas mileage r pretty close, but l find the inline 6 of the 2jz-ge engine on the sc300 easier to work on. The parts r also a tad cheaper for the sc300 (5 bucks for an oil filter from the toyota dealer instead of 7 on the sc400. Only need 6 of those iridium plugs too). However, if u plan on taking to the lexus dealer for maintenance, prepare to be screwed. l paid 80 bucks for an oil change once & have performed most of the maintenance myself since.

It may say lexus all over the outside, but all the parts inside says Toyota. If u do not feel comfortable working on it yourself, look for a good toyota mechanic that wo not gouge u because of the ''L'' badge.

well its a tough decision to make,
if u take the 300 u will always think damn l should have taken the 400 for extra power, who cares about mileage neways.

and if a 400 is taken u will crib at the gas pump always thinking l am hardly pushing the car to limits a 300 would give better mileage.

i'd say checkout for deals whichever comes for a better price & a better condition prefer that than just a number at the tail of the car.

For power l would go for the SC400, overall l would choose a SC300 for economy wise and they are good performance motors.

the only reason an sc300 would be better than an sc400.

supra engine+it can be manual trans. v6 will always be economical than an 8.
