thinking of Buying a Lexus,, about a 1998 or 2002the 98 has 87K miles it may be just a bit higher the 2002 has less miles but the price is higher... anyway
l like the GS 300/ 400 modles the best,, it just has a tight body style & it looks fast and sets just right on 20s'' inch rims. SO does any one have opinions about the GS 300 / 400
1 as to Tuning them
2 performance
3 Reliability
4 major common problems ect.....?

G, L, OUT.

l had a lex and to tell you the truth l like hondas mazda batter sooo much more for and cheap parts my mazda is 16 years old and still goes with all the same parts but for oil brakes and will some after market stuff but for a lex its not wroth it unless you are getting a new one

l would go with either, if they both been in good shape and been taken care of very well, then they will last,
i just bought a 99 GS300 and also have 20 inch rims, lol
i had high miles on it, but l knew the owners so l know it was in good hands, and for perfomence, its great and reliability, lexus is owned by toyota so it a great car that will last, and major problems. l have not came upon one yet, l hope not
anyways, l love the gs300 it still looks great =)

Is just another Toyota Camry A-La-Mercedes Benz headlights. Sorry bud, but l think it looks ugly and with 20 in rims is too much wheel for it. But, l know, l know, that is what is in fashion now these days. Buy it if you like it, is your money. Do no forget the fuzzy dices, and the Mercedez Benz gold plated hood ornament or Superman logo.!

Both of these models have been extremely reliable over the years, but make sure you're not buying one from a kid or anyone who has not cared for the car properly -- ask to see maintenance records (for oil changes, etc). Also, the GS 400 will eat up a lot more gas than the 6-cylinder GS 300, & will also cost a bit more to maintain. Otherwise both great cars. One more thing? Unless u drive on roads that r as smooth as polished glass, l would avoid the 20'' rims. My neighbor as a 2000 GS 300 with 19'' rims & he constantly ends up with bent rims or damaged tires -- we live in Brooklyn & the quality of roads here is terrible. Yeah, l know the big dubs look great, but they make the car ride poorly & they often lead to expensive damage. D

1) please do not ever put 20'' chrome rims on the lexus, it looks gay as hell

2)they all are reliable

3) the IS250/350 are the only tunable cars sold right now (even then they have few parts out for them)

4) IS-F/IS350/SC430

5)had a lexus IS350, now have a 2008 audi S4, l like it better

Please do not listen to spamme as he comes over to the Lexus section daily to tell us how bad our cars are. He drives a Pontiac. Need l say more?

First off, great choice on the GS, it is a great platform to say the least. Now lets answer ur question:
1. Tuning the GS: There is is huge aftermarket support for both the GS300 & 400. The GS300 has a Supra motor in VVT-i form which can be easily turboed to make over 500whp provided that u build the auto transmission or swap to a R154 or V160. If ur goal is power, u can keep the stock motor & either put a GTE supra block in it or just install built internals because in 98+ motors Toyota put weaker rods compared to the 92-97 2JZ motors. The GS400 definitly has tuning potential, but not as much as the GS300. There r ready-made Supercharger kits available for the 400, some member is even did custom twin turbo setups to make insane power. There is a great deal of suspension upgrades, big brake kits, etc.

2.Performance: Out-of-the-box, the GS400 smokes the GS300 power wise for sure. If u do not plan to go forced induction (turbo or supercharge), then l highly suggest the GS4 because it already makes 300hp & 300 torque. The GS300 makes roughly 225hp & 215tq. The handling on these is fantastic partly because they r RWD, but they're certainly not BMW M5's. but they can be made to handle even better with mods.

3. Reliability: This is without a doubt onw of the most reliable vehicle on the planet. Do not take my word for it, just go ask the guys that have over 400k miles on them bone stock with nothing replaced besides scheduled maintanance. The 1UZ-FE motor in the GS400 is Toyota is most reliable motor. They spent over $500 million to develop it & for 18 years there has not been a single case of premature failiure. To show how freakishly reliable it is. there is a 1uz motor with over 1.2 million miles on it in a production plant in Japan. The GS300 is equally reliable. but since its an I6 & not a V8, it probably wo not last u as long. Surprizingly, the GS400 gets better fuel economy because the 4.0L needs less effort to pull the car.

4.Major Problems: Nothing really. It would be a good idea to replace the lower control arms on the car, especially the fronts if the car has high mileage. Other then that. Nothing!

The verdict? I'd get a GS400 personally because l am not into high horsepower, but if power is what u want, get the GS3 & make it a beast. Good luck with ur choice!

p.s- voluntar has his facts mixed up. the gs300 is a I6 not a v6, & l do not know what he drove in 1997 but it sure as heck was not a GS400 because they were not even out yet.

The GS 300 has a v6 & less horsepower. The GS400 is a v8 & has a lot of horsepower. l used to drive my aunt is '97 GS400 & that car would fly with no effort - it also drank the gas. And ur insurance would be higher on a higher hp car. l have looked around for 400s & they r a bit harder to find. There r many more used 300s out there.

As for which to buy it really depends on what u want to spend. That 98 has pretty low miles & might be a good buy. The 02 is newer & will probably last longer, but if u can not afford it l do not think getting the 98 is a bad idea. Its really up to u & ur checking account.
