It uses infra red to detect distances between the car and the curb or wall.

yes, lexus' new LS has the ability to parallel park itself. this is of course is not a standard option

yes they did, also the toyota pruis does the same. but l think thats an extra feature for the toyota.

Yes, the 2007 LS460 & LS460L (long wheelbase) will have them as an option. You line up the car to the point where normally u would start parallel parking, press a button on the dash & sensors measure the spot to make sure u will fit, then the electronic steering takes over & you're in.

l would not imagine many people using that all the time because it is incredibly slow with the sensor calculations & then finally going in slowly as well. You will either be honked at by everyone behind you, or just rammed from behind. It is very neat however the idea.
